What is with Cubbi, first we find out that he was raised by bunnies, then he seems to have the mind of Devinge then he figures out that they need to give wine to the moss goblin, now finaly he has grown wings. Why is this happening to such a simmingly simple and innocent goblin?

lol...thanks for asking!

Cubbi started out as a cute addition to the crew...honestly because Steve (the artist) did a character design that had popped up now and again in strips (you can see an anonymous Cubbi in some old strips).

I loved that little guy so much, I wanted to make him a secondary character...then he sort of joined the group.

When I discovered (or figured out, or wrote...whatever) that Cubbi was raised by bunnies, that made his character clear to me.

Goblins (oh, this is all my opinion, btw...) have a terrible, ass-backwards culture. They do sacrifices, constantly have tribal warfare, and have superstitions that don't actually contribute to gaining access to the powers they get from their Gods.

As individuals, however, Goblins are just about as capable as any other race, just smaller. The strip started because Gabo (and in his own way, Nub) reject parts of their goblin culture (again...Nub loves some of it). Making Cubbi somebody that was raised outside of that group, gives him the potential to do all kinds of things.

To be fair, I think the recent events (the wings) was a happy accident of Gabo's spell AND the flute...again, just my opinion...open to other theories!! Smiley

I talked about this with Steve, but I liked the reveal in this strip.
My eyes were drawn to words, as they convey most of the plot and are in bright word bubbles.
Cubby tries to pipe in what happened, but what Gabo finally acknowledged him "What Cub?" on the way to Cubby's line my eyes passed the wings. This caused a double take before I got to the next line where he said, "I think the flute did something after all!!"

One other thing of note.
Gabo wasn't really paying attention to Cubby. Although stunned by this turn of events, he's still wagging his finger at Nub. Nub, however, is pointing toward Cubby. Furthermore while Gabo did see Cubby hovering after his sentence, it appears that the angle he's dangling at could have caused him to not to see the wings. From Gabo's position Cubby's frame could be partially blocking them. Nub however, dangling from eye level with the wings, does see them more clearly and acknowledged them in kind.

To read more into it, look at strip 79. We had foreshadowing.
  • Gabo reached for vines, and got them,
  • Nub turtled up,
  • Kernel is flapping, but panicked,
  • Cubby looks like he's about to take flight, like a leap of faith.
As a result he got the wings.
